Intradural Extramedullary

Intradural extramedullary refers to a location within the spinal dura mater but outside the spinal cord, a key anatomical distinction in evaluating spinal disease. Lesions in this compartment, including schwannomas, meningiomas, and other tumors, arise around rather than within the cord and may compress nerve roots or displace neural tissue as they enlarge. Magnetic resonance imaging helps define their position, extent, and relationship to the cord, guiding differential diagnosis and surgical planning. Recognizing this pattern supports timely management of pain, weakness, sensory changes, and other signs of spinal cord or nerve-root compression, while helping clinicians distinguish these lesions from intramedullary and extradural conditions.

Source: Li, D., et al. Direct Intrathecal Injection of Recombinant Adeno-associated Viruses in Adult Mice. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the procedure for the intrathecal injection of adeno-associated viruses (AAV) into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of an awake mouse, covering syringe preparation, spinal alignment, and precise needle insertion. This method validates targeted gene delivery, supporting its potential for CNS therapies.

An Orthotopic Sciatic Nerve Xenograft for Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Neurofibromas

2025

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) leads to benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors (neurofibromas) that require a specific nerve microenvironment for growth. An optimized orthotopic xenograft model was developed, using intraneural injection of human Schwann cells into NSG mice. This model recapitulates human neurofibromas and provides a valuable platform to evaluate therapeutic strategies.
