Pediatric Urology

Pediatric urology is the medical and surgical specialty focused on urinary and genital conditions in infants, children, and adolescents, whose developing anatomy requires age-specific care. It addresses problems such as congenital anomalies, urinary tract obstruction, vesicoureteral reflux, undescended testes, and bladder or bowel dysfunction by evaluating how abnormal structure, nerve signaling, or urine flow affects growth and organ function. Clinicians use physical examination, urinalysis, ultrasound, urodynamic testing, and minimally invasive or reconstructive procedures to preserve kidney function and support healthy development. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent recurrent infections, renal damage, continence problems, and lasting effects on physical and psychosocial well-being.

Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...

2025

This video showcases a technique for co-culturing glutamatergic neurons and pediatric high-grade glioma (pHGG) cells within a microfluidic device. Human induced pluripotent stem cells are introduced into the microfluidic system and incubated to promote their differentiation into mature cortical glutamatergic neurons. Following this, the pHGG cells are introduced onto the mature neurons, establishing a co-culture and enabling interactions between neurons and pHGG cells.

Despite an increase in the use of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans, the study of young pediatric populations remains a challenge. We present a hands-on, step-by-step video protocol including guidelines for clinicians and researchers intending to perform (f)MRI in young children.
