Pulmonary Malignancy Surgery

Pulmonary malignancy surgery is the operative treatment of cancer arising in the lung or related thoracic structures, intended to remove disease while preserving as much functioning lung as possible. Surgeons excise the primary tumor with an adequate margin and assess regional lymph nodes, using procedures such as wedge resection, segmentectomy, lobectomy, or pneumonectomy according to tumor size, location, spread, and respiratory reserve. In medicine, these operations support diagnosis, staging, and potentially curative treatment for selected patients with localized lung cancer. Surgical findings also guide chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy, while careful patient selection and postoperative management help balance cancer control with pulmonary function.

2012

A rapid and accurate point-of-care test for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is presented. It takes advantage of lateral-flow technology using a specific monoclonal antibody that binds to an Aspergillus antigen secreted during pulmonary infections. The assay is compatible with serum and brochoalveolar lavage and represents a novel adjunct test for disease diagnosis.

Transgenic lck:eGFP zebrafish express GFP highly in T lymphocytes, and have been used to study T cell development and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This line can be used to study B cells, which express lck at lower levels. This protocol describes purification of malignant and non-malignant B cells from lck:eGFP zebrafish.
