Vascular Mapping Technique

Vascular mapping is a medical imaging technique that identifies the location, course, branching pattern, and condition of blood vessels, supporting diagnosis and treatment planning. It generates a vascular map by detecting blood flow or enhancing the vessel lumen with methods such as Doppler ultrasound, computed tomography angiography, magnetic resonance angiography, or injected contrast media. Clinicians use these maps to evaluate stenosis, occlusion, aneurysms, malformations, and collateral circulation, while surgeons use them to plan access routes, grafts, and tissue reconstruction. By defining individual vascular anatomy before intervention, the technique can improve procedural precision, reduce complications, and guide personalized care.

2011

Vascular mapping of monochorionic (MC) twin placentas after birth provides a means for detailed demonstration of vascular connections between the twins’ circulations. Imbalance of these connections is thought to play a pivotal role in the development of complications of MC twinning including twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

We present a method for microfluidic deposition of patterned genipin and fibronectin on PDMS substrates, allowing extended viability of vascular smooth muscle cell-dense tissues. This tissue fabrication method is combined with previous vascular muscular thin film technology to measure vascular contractility over disease-relevant time courses.

Fate Mapping

2023

Fate mapping is a technique used to understand how embryonic cells divide, differentiate, and migrate during development. In classic fate mapping experiments, cells in different areas of an embryo are labeled with a chemical dye and then tracked to determine which tissues or structures they form. Technological improvements now allow for individual cells to be marked and traced throughout embryonic development and adulthood. This video reviews the concepts behind fate mapping, and then details a...

Motor Maps

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California One principle of brain organization is the topographic mapping of information. Especially in sensory and motor cortices, adjacent regions of the brain tend to represent information from adjacent parts of the body, resulting in maps of the body expressed on the surface of the brain. The primary sensory and motor maps in the brain surround a prominent sulcus known as the central sulcus. The cortex...
