Cognitive Decision Making

Cognitive decision making is the mental process by which people evaluate information, compare alternatives, and choose actions, making it central to adaptive behavior and neuroscience. In the brain, sensory evidence, memories, goals, and emotional signals are integrated through valuation and executive-control networks; prefrontal regions help represent options and future outcomes, while basal ganglia circuits contribute to action selection and reinforcement learning. Studying cognitive decision making helps explain choices under uncertainty, risk, and changing rewards, and supports research into attention, addiction, mental illness, artificial intelligence, and interventions that improve judgment and behavior.

Cognitive Abilities and Financial Decisions

2026

Cognitive abilities, including reasoning, problem-solving, memory, and decision-making, are crucial in financial decision-making. These skills enable individuals to process financial information, assess risks, and make informed investment choices. Investors with higher cognitive abilities are more likely to engage in the stock market because they can analyze data effectively, understand complex financial concepts, and develop sound strategies.Financial decision-making ability varies among...

Comparing the Frequency Effect Between the Lexical Decision and Naming Tasks in Chinese

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Decision-making is an important component of human executive function, in which a choice about a course of action or cognition is made from many possibilities. Damage to the inferior parts of the frontal lobes can affect a person's ability to make good decisions. However, while decision-making deficits can have a large impact on one's life, these deficits can be difficult to quantify in the laboratory.

An Introduction to Cognition

2023

Cognition encompasses mental processes such as memory, perception, decision-making reasoning and language. Cognitive scientists are using a combination of behavioral and neuropsychological techniques to investigate the underlying neural substrates of cognition. They are interested in understanding how information is perceived, processed and how does it affect the final execution of behaviors. With this knowledge, researchers hope to develop new treatments for individuals with cognitive...
