Cortical Aspiration

Cortical aspiration is a neurosurgical technique that removes localized areas of cerebral cortex by applying controlled suction, creating a focal lesion for studying brain structure and function. After exposing the cortex, researchers use an aspiration device to withdraw selected tissue while limiting damage to surrounding regions, with lesion size and location guided by the experimental design. In neuroscience, this method helps reveal relationships between cortical areas and behaviors such as learning, sensory processing, and motor control. Comparing animals or outcomes with and without targeted cortical tissue provides evidence about regional function, neural plasticity, and the capacity of other brain circuits to compensate after injury.
