Laser Diode

A laser diode is a semiconductor device that converts electrical current into a narrow, coherent beam of light, providing a compact and controllable source for scientific instruments. In its p-n junction, electrons and holes recombine in an active region; stimulated emission amplifies photons between reflective surfaces until light exits through the device. In neuroscience, laser diodes can deliver precisely timed wavelengths for optogenetic stimulation, excite fluorescent indicators, or support fiber-based recordings and microscopy. Their small size, rapid modulation, and wavelength specificity enable targeted control and measurement of neural activity, helping researchers link defined circuits with behavior and disease-related changes.

2016

A protocol to detect and automate mode locking in a pre-adjusted nonlinear polarization rotation fiber laser is presented. The detection of a sudden change in the output polarization state when mode locking occurs is used to command the alignment of an intra-cavity polarization controller in order to find mode-locking conditions.
