Proximal Distal Forelimb

Proximal-distal forelimb organization describes neural control and movement along the limb’s axis, from the shoulder and upper arm to the wrist, hand, and digits. Proximal actions position the limb, whereas distal actions support precise grasping and manipulation; motor commands arise from distributed cortical networks and travel through corticospinal pathways to spinal interneurons and motor neurons, while sensory feedback refines force and timing. Studying this organization connects anatomy with motor behavior and helps explain reaching, skilled hand use, rehabilitation, and recovery after neurological injury.

Measuring Compound Muscle Action Potentials in Mouse Forelimb Muscles In Vivo

2025

This video demonstrates an in vivo technique for measuring compound muscle action potential (CMAP) in mice. It outlines the steps for setting up electrodes, stimulating forelimb neurons that innervate muscle fibers, and recording muscle responses. The technique assesses neuronal demyelination and functional neuron loss.

Direct Reconnection of Cervical Nerves to Restore Forelimb Mobility in a Mouse

Source: Gao, Z., et al. A Mouse Model of Direct Anastomosis via the Prespinal Route for Crossing Nerve Transfer Surgery. J. Vis. Exp. (2021).This video demonstrates restoring forelimb movement in a mouse via direct cervical nerve reconnection. It begins with a mouse with a paralyzed right forelimb due to a transected right C7 nerve at its nerve root. The left C7 nerve is severed, guided to the right via the prespinal route, and sutured with the right C7 nerve. The surgical site is then cleaned...
