T9 Vertebrae

The T9 vertebra is the ninth thoracic vertebra, a bony segment of the spinal column that supports the trunk and helps protect the spinal cord. Its vertebral body bears compressive loads, while the neural arch encloses the spinal canal and its processes provide attachment points for ligaments and back muscles; rib-articulating facets connect T9 to the thoracic cage. In neuroscience, understanding T9 anatomy helps clinicians localize spinal cord levels, interpret radiographic and magnetic resonance images, and assess injuries affecting sensation, movement, or autonomic function below the thoracic region. This landmark also supports planning for spinal procedures and biomechanical studies of the vertebral column.

General Structure of a Vertebra

2025

A typical vertebra, with the exception of the sacrum and coccyx, consists of a body, a vertebral arch, and seven different projections termed processes. The anterior portion of the vertebrae, the body, supports about half the body’s weight. The vertebral bodies progressively increase in size and thickness from the cervical region to the lumbar region of the vertebral column. The intervertebral discs present between the bodies of adjacent vertebrae firmly unites them, forming a continuous column.

In this protocol, two approaches are described to make uniaxial compression testing of mouse lumbar vertebrae more attainable. First, the conversion of a three-point bending machine to a compression testing machine is described. Second, an embedding method for preparing the loading surface that uses bone cement is adapted for mouse lumbar vertebrae.

Source: Kumar, S., et. al. Mouse Model of Pressure Ulcers After Spinal Cord Injury. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates a detailed induction of spinal cord injury in mice. The anesthetized mouse is dissected to expose T9-T10 vertebrae, and their spinous processes are removed. The exposed spinal cord is then transected to inflict the injury. The surgical area is then closed, and the mouse is allowed to recover.

Performing Thoracic Spinal Cord Hemisection Surgery in Rats
