Unilateral C2 Hemisection

Unilateral C2 hemisection is an experimental lesion in which one side of the spinal cord is surgically severed at the second cervical vertebral level, providing a controlled model of spinal cord injury. The procedure interrupts neural pathways that travel through the injured hemicord, producing side-specific changes in descending motor control, ascending sensory transmission, and communication between brain and spinal circuits while leaving the opposite side relatively intact. In neuroscience, this model helps researchers examine neural deficits, compensatory plasticity, respiratory and motor circuitry, and recovery after injury, supporting studies of spinal repair, rehabilitation, and therapies designed to restore function.

Respiratory complications are the leading cause of death in individuals with cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI). Animal models of cSCI are essential for mechanistic evaluations and pre-clinical studies. Here, we introduce a reproducible method to assess functional recovery of diaphragm muscle (DIAm) activity following unilateral C2 spinal hemisection (C2SH) in rats.

Performing Thoracic Spinal Cord Hemisection Surgery in Rats

This video demonstrates the surgical procedure for performing a thoracic spinal cord hemisection in rats. It outlines the steps to expose the T8 spinal cord segment, perform the hemisection to disrupt neural tracts on one side, and provide post-operative care.

We applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the unilateral hemisphere of rat brain, by placing a 25-mm figure-8 coil 1 cm lateral to the vertex on the biauricular line and angulating the coil by 45°. An in-house water cooling system was used for rTMS for more than 20 min.

The murine model of irreversible unilateral ureteric obstruction (UUO) is presented together with the model of reversible UUO in which the ureteric obstruction is relieved by anastomosis of the severed ureter into the bladder. These models enable the study of renal inflammation and scarring as well as tissue remodeling.

A Contusive Model of Unilateral Cervical Spinal Cord Injury Using the Infinite Horizon Impactor

A reliable and repeatable way to produce a cervical unilateral spinal cord injury using the Infinite Horizon impactor is described. The method takes advantage of a custom designed frame and clamp to stabilize the spine. The standardized procedure and biomechanical injury parameters result in sufficient and sustained injuries.
