Acute Spasm Treatment

Acute spasm treatment refers to the short-term use of medicines and supportive measures to relieve sudden, involuntary muscle contractions and their associated pain. Pharmacological options act according to the affected tissue and cause of spasm: skeletal muscle relaxants can reduce abnormal activity in the central nervous system or neuromuscular pathways, while smooth-muscle antispasmodics decrease contraction by modifying autonomic signaling or intracellular calcium-dependent excitation. Treatment selection depends on whether the spasm involves skeletal muscle, the gastrointestinal tract, or another organ system, as well as symptom severity and adverse-effect risk. Appropriate therapy can restore movement, improve comfort, and support management of acute clinical conditions.

Vascular Spasm

The vascular phase, also known as vasospasm, is the initial stage of hemostasis, crucial for preventing excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. After a vessel is cut, nerves in the damaged area trigger pain and other sensory impulses. Simultaneously, the smooth muscles in the vessel wall contract, resulting in a vascular spasm. This contraction reduces the vessel's diameter at the injury site, slowing or stopping blood loss through the vessel wall. Vascular spasms typically last for...

Source: Schregel, K., et al. Optimized Management of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke using the stent retriever-assisted vacuum-locked extraction technique. A guiding sheath is introduced through the femoral artery to reach the clot. A catheter with a stent retriever secures and extracts the clot. Vascular imaging is done to confirm successful reperfusion.

An Acute Retinal Model for Evaluating Blood Retinal Barrier Breach and Potential Drugs for Treatment

A low-cost, easy-to-use and powerful system is established to evaluate potential treatments that could ameliorate blood retinal barrier breach induced by histamine. Blood vessel leakage, Müller cell activation and the continuity of neuronal processes are utilized to assess the damage response and its reversal with a potential drug, lipoxin A4.
