Blood Cell Detection

Blood cell detection is the identification and measurement of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in a blood sample, an essential step in assessing health and disease. Detection systems measure physical signals produced as cells interact with light, electric fields, or fluid flow; differences in size, shape, optical properties, and electrical behavior help distinguish cell types and determine their concentrations. In physics, these measurements connect biological analysis with imaging, spectroscopy, electrical sensing, and microfluidics. Applications include automated blood counts, disease monitoring, biomedical diagnostics, and the development of compact instruments for rapid analysis in clinical and research settings.

Here we describe two assays for measuring complement activation induced by antibodies against red blood cells. The major advantage over the current assays is their quantitative and easy-to-interpret nature.

Periodic Acid-Schiff Staining of Cells: An In Vitro Technique to Detect Glycogen Levels in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells

This protocol demonstrates how to achieve femto molar detection sensitivity of proteins in 10 µL of whole blood within 30 min. This can be achieved by using electrospun nanofibrous mats integrated in a lab-on-a-disc, which offers high surface area as well as effective mixing and washing for enhanced signal-to-noise ratio.

This protocol describes a detailed method for efficient generation of integration-free iPSCs from human adult peripheral blood cells. With the use of four oriP/EBNA-based episomal vectors to express the reprogramming factors, KLF4, MYC, BCL-XL, or OCT4 and SOX2, thousands of iPSC colonies can be obtained from 1 mL of peripheral blood.
