Elastic Band Oscillator

An elastic band oscillator is a mechanical system in which an elastic band supplies the restoring force that drives a suspended or attached mass back and forth, providing a practical model for studying oscillatory motion. When displaced, the band stores elastic potential energy; upon release, this energy converts to kinetic energy and back again as the mass moves through repeated cycles. Because an elastic band can exhibit a nonlinear force-extension relationship, its motion may differ from ideal simple harmonic motion. In physics investigations, the system helps examine period, amplitude, energy transfer, damping, and the limits of Hooke’s law.

When two or more atoms come together to form a molecule, their atomic orbitals combine and molecular orbitals of distinct energies result. In a solid, there are a large number of atoms, and therefore a large number of atomic orbitals that may be combined into molecular orbitals. These groups of molecular orbitals are so closely placed together to form continuous regions of energies, known as the bands. The energy difference between these bands is known as the band gap. Parametric optomechanical excitations have recently been experimentally demonstrated in microfluidic optomechanical resonators by means of optical radiation pressure and stimulated Brillouin scattering. This paper describes the fabrication of these microfluidic resonators along with methodologies for generating and verifying optomechanical oscillations.

In Vitro Recording of Theta Oscillations in the Mouse Hippocampus

2025

This video demonstrates the recording of rhythmic neuronal network activity, also known as theta oscillations, in an isolated hippocampus. Electrodes are inserted into various layers and spatial positions to detect and analyze theta oscillations. This shows the unique neuronal compositions and the connectivity of the neuronal network across different layers of the hippocampus.
