Spring Tides

Spring tides are the largest tidal ranges produced when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align, making them an important phenomenon in physics and ocean science. They occur near the new and full Moon, when the Sun’s and Moon’s gravitational forces act along the same line and reinforce one another, producing higher high tides and lower low tides than usual. Spring tides influence coastal flooding, navigation, harbor operations, and the movement of sediment in estuaries. Understanding their timing and magnitude also helps researchers model ocean circulation and assess how coastal systems respond to changing sea levels.

Frequency of Spring-Mass System

One interesting characteristic of the simple harmonic motion (SHM) of an object attached to a spring is that the angular frequency, and the period and frequency of the motion, depend only on the mass and the force constant of the spring, and not on other factors such as the amplitude of the motion or initial conditions. We can use the equations of motion and Newton's second law to find the angular frequency, frequency, and period. Consider a block on a spring on a frictionless surface. There...

Here we describe how to build a robust spring-transport mechanism for a spinning rotor gauge. This device securely immobilizes the rotor and keeps it under vacuum during transportation. We also describe packaging that minimizes the risk of damage during transport. Tests show our design works for typical shocks during transport.
