In Abzügen und Laminar-Flow-Schränken werden Gefahren oder Verunreinigungen durch den Luftstrom reduziert. Abzüge saugen Luft über einen Arbeitsbereich an, um gefährliche Dämpfe und feine Partikel zu entfernen, während Laminar-Flow-Werkbänke Luft durch einen Filter und nach außen blasen, um eine Kontamination der Proben durch Staub oder biologische Materialien zu verhindern. Dieser hohe Durchfluss ist notwendig, um das Entweichen von Dämpfen zu verhindern. Mittlerweile gibt es zwei Arten von Laminar-Flow-Schränken, horizontale und vertikale. In beiden Fällen wird die Luft durch einen Ansaug- und Reinigungsfilter gesaugt, wo sie von kleinen Partikeln wie Staub und Bakterien befreit wird. Ein horizontaler Schrank leitet die Luft horizontal durch den Arbeitsbereich. Diese Art von Schrank verringert die Kontamination durch Hände und Handschuhe, da diese den Proben nachgeschaltet sind. Der Fahrtwind bläst jedoch direkt auf den Benutzer, und große Gegenstände können die Strömung behindern. In einem vertikalen Schrank wird die Luft von oben auf den Arbeitsbereich und dann an einem Flügel vorbei nach außen geleitet. Da diese Art der Strömung direkt mit der Oberfläche der Arbeitsmaterialien in Kontakt kommt, trägt sie dazu bei, Kreuzkontaminationen zu vermeiden. Allerdings kann der Flügel die Handbewegung einschränken und die Luftströmung ist turbulenter als bei einem horizontalen Schrank. Um einen Abzug sicher zu verwenden, tragen Sie immer eine geeignete persönliche Schutzausrüstung.
