Filtration

Filtration ist die physikalische Trennung von Feststoffen aus einer Flüssigkeit mit Hilfe eines Filtrationsmediums.
Die Wahl des Filtrationsmediums hängt vom Zweck der Filtration, der Menge und der Partikelgröße des Feststoffs ab.
Im Allgemeinen steigt die Filtrationseffizienz mit der Partikelgröße.
Bei der einfachen Filtration lässt man zunächst den Niederschlag absetzen und die Mutterlauge wird über einen Glasstab in einen mit Filterpapier bestückten Trichter umgefüllt.
Anschließend wird der Niederschlag mit Hilfe eines Gummipolizisten auf das Filterpapier übertragen.
Aschefreies Filterpapier kann gezündet werden, um den Niederschlag zurückzugewinnen, wenn eine Verwiegung erforderlich ist.
Alternativ kann ein an einem Buchner-Kolben befestigter Sinterglastrichter verwendet werden, der über einen Seitenarm verfügt, der mit einer Vakuumpumpe verbunden werden kann, um den Niederschlag aufzufangen.

Bei der Filtration handelt es sich um einen physikalischen Trennprozess, bei dem eine Suspension durch ein poröses Medium geleitet wird, um FestSubstanzen von Flüssigkeiten zu trennen. Bei der Filtration sammeln sich FestSubstanzen auf dem porösen Medium, während Flüssigkeiten, auch Filtrat genannt, hindurchströmen. Das Filtermedium wird basierend auf dem Filterzweck, der Menge und der Art des Niederschlags ausgewählt. Die allgemeinen Kriterien für ein geeignetes Filtermedium sind, dass es inert, mechanisch stabil, nicht absorbierend gegenüber gelösten Materialien und durchlässig für eine schnelle Filtration ist.

Der einfachste Filterapparat besteht aus Filterpapier, das in einem langstieligen Trichter über einem Becherglas angebracht ist. Die zu filtrierende Lösung wird über einen Glasstab auf das Filterpapier gegossen. Das Filtrat wird im Becherglas gesammelt und der FestSubstanz wird auf dem Filterpapier zurückgehalten. Eventuelle FestSubstanzen, die am Glasstab oder am Becherglas mit der Originallösung haften, werden mit einem Gummipolier entfernt. Da Filterpapier hygroskopisch ist, wird beim Wiegen aschefreies oder aschearmes Filterpapier bevorzugt. Aschefreies Filterpapier wird auch bei gravimetrischen Verfahren eingesetzt, bei denen die FestSubstanzen vor dem Wiegen entzündet werden.

Alternativ kann der FestSubstanz in Glas- oder Quarztiegeln gesammelt werden, die eine poröse Glasscheibe enthalten. Der FestSubstanz wird in den Tiegel überführt, der in einen Büchner-Kolben eingebaut ist, und die Filtration erfolgt unter Absaugen. Nach der Filtration wird der Tiegel getrocknet und direkt gewogen. Der Gewichtsunterschied des Tiegels vor und nach der Filtration ergibt die Masse des gesammelten FestSubstanzs.

Filtration separates a solid from a liquid by passing a suspension through a porous medium. The solid stays on the filter, and the liquid, called the filtrate, passes through. This makes filtration a physical separation process, not a chemical change.

The filtering medium is chosen for the purpose of the separation, the amount of material, and the nature of the precipitate. A good filter medium should be inert, mechanically strong, nonabsorbent toward dissolved materials, and able to let liquid pass through quickly. These features help the separation work efficiently and keep the sample unchanged.

A simple filtration setup uses filter paper in a long-stemmed funnel above a beaker. The mixture is poured down a glass rod so it flows onto the paper. The filtrate collects in the beaker, while the solid remains on the filter paper. Any solid that sticks to the glass rod or the beaker is removed with a rubber policeman.

When the solid must be weighed, ashless or low-ash filter paper is preferred because filter paper is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. Ashless filter paper is also used in gravimetric procedures that require the solid to be ignited before weighing. Another option is to collect the solid in a glass or silica crucible with a porous glass disc, then use suction filtration in a Buchner flask. After filtration, the crucible is dried and weighed directly, and the mass of the solid is found from the difference between the crucible’s weight before and after filtration.

Understand and be prepared to use values specific to chemical processes: the mole, molar mass, molarity, and percent composition. EXPLANATION: During the early and mid-1800s, a tremendous amount of early research poured into building an understanding of the way that atoms combine. This work required analysis of the percent composition of different substances. Joseph Proust's work with tin oxides led him to publish his law of definite proportions noting that a given pure substance will have a constant ratio for the combination of elements making up the substance. Building on Proust's work, John Dalton published his law of multiple proportions and atomic theory noting that multiple patterns exist for the way that atoms combine, yet the combining atoms are invariable. Meanwhile Amedeo Avogadro hypothesizes that given equal pressures and temperatures, two equal volumes of gas will contain equal numbers of atoms. Acknowledging that the exact number of atoms was unknown in these gaseous volumes, the Latin word "mole" was used. "Mole" translates to "lump" recognizing the ambiguous quantity of gas. A number of attempts have been undertaken historically to quantify the mole. Robert Millikan's oil drop experiment revealed the change of a single electron, which could then be divided into Faraday's Constant for the charge of a mole of electrons. Dividing the charge of a mole of electrons by the charge of a single electron yields the number of electrons in a mole, $6.022\times10^{\wedge}23$. Students should be familiar with how to translate between the given quantities. Student's first use atomism/Dalton's atomic theory in third grade noting that matter is made up of particles too small to be seen. This the first time where students will undertake the process of counting these invisible particles. Electrolysis of water provides a tangible experience to demonstrate the constituent parts of water, though the definite proportions of water may not be easily seen due to the solubility of the gasses produced. The concept of relative mass can be explored by comparing small groups of like items. For example, relative masses of beans can be compared with pinto, white, and black beans. If bags are created with equal numbers of like beans, students can develop a concept of why the smallest bean will have a relative mass of 1, analogous to hydrogen.
