Precipitation and Co-precipitation

Precipitation and coprecipitation techniques can be applied to separate a mixture of ions.
When different ions form sparingly soluble salts with the same reagent, they can be separated by precipitation if their solubility products differ significantly.
In an acidic solution of hydrogen sulfide, the product of copper and sulfide ion concentrations exceeds the solubility product. So, copper sulfide is precipitated while the ferrous ions remain in solution.
However, when the solution acidity is decreased to promote the sulfide ion concentration, iron sulfide is precipitated.
Coprecipitation is a phenomenon where the precipitate is contaminated by species soluble in the mother liquor.
For instance, water contaminated by arsenic is purified by a process based on coprecipitation called gathering.
Here, iron particles are added to arsenic-contaminated water, and oxidized to obtain a precipitate of ferric hydroxide.
Arsenic coprecipitates with ferric hydroxide and can be filtered to produce non-toxic drinking water.

For example, consider the separation of Cu(II) and Fe(II) ions by precipitation as insoluble sulfides. First, copper(II) sulfide is precipitated by the addition of acidic H2S, where the dissociation of H2S is suppressed. Adding H2S increases the product of sulfide ion and copper ion concentrations. When this product exceeds the solubility product of copper(II) sulfide, precipitation occurs. On the other hand, H2S alone cannot be used to precipitate iron(II) sulfide because its solubility product is higher than that of copper(II) sulfide. Successful precipitation of FeS requires the addition of aqueous ammonia.
Coprecipitation is a method used to remove otherwise soluble contaminants by using a substance that can coprecipitate with the contaminants. This technique can be used to isolate trace components from a solution. For instance, the tendency of arsenic to coprecipitate with ferric hydroxide is exploited in a process called gathering. During this process,&#160; Fe(II) or solid iron particles are added to water contaminated by arsenic. The iron particles are then oxidized for several hours to obtain ferric hydroxide precipitates, which now contain arsenic. Finally, the arsenic-bearing precipitate is removed by repetitive filtration to produce safe drinking water.

Selective ion separation by precipitation is used to isolate ions from a solution. In qualitative inorganic analysis, ions that form sparingly soluble precipitates with the same reagent can be separated by using differences in their solubility products. A solubility product is the limit at which an ionic solid begins to form from dissolved ions.

One example is the separation of Cu(II) and Fe(II) ions as insoluble sulfides. Copper(II) sulfide is first precipitated by adding acidic H2S. The acid suppresses the dissociation of H2S, and the added H2S raises the product of sulfide ion and copper ion concentrations. When that product becomes greater than the solubility product of copper(II) sulfide, the solid forms.

Iron(II) sulfide does not precipitate under the same conditions because its solubility product is higher than that of copper(II) sulfide. To make FeS precipitate, aqueous ammonia must be added. This changes the conditions enough for successful precipitation of iron(II) sulfide.

Coprecipitation is used to remove contaminants that would otherwise stay dissolved. In this method, a substance forms a precipitate that carries the contaminants with it. The process can isolate trace components from a solution.

A practical example is the removal of arsenic by gathering. In this process, Fe(II) or solid iron particles are added to arsenic-contaminated water. The iron particles are then oxidized for several hours to form ferric hydroxide precipitates, which contain arsenic. The arsenic-bearing precipitate is then removed by repeated filtration to make safe drinking water.

Understand and be prepared to use values specific to chemical processes: the mole, molar mass, molarity, and percent composition. EXPLANATION: During the early and mid-1800s, a tremendous amount of early research poured into building an understanding of the way that atoms combine. This work required analysis of the percent composition of different substances. Joseph Proust's work with tin oxides led him to publish his law of definite proportions noting that a given pure substance will have a constant ratio for the combination of elements making up the substance. Building on Proust's work, John Dalton published his law of multiple proportions and atomic theory noting that multiple patterns exist for the way that atoms combine, yet the combining atoms are invariable. Meanwhile Amedeo Avogadro hypothesizes that given equal pressures and temperatures, two equal volumes of gas will contain equal numbers of atoms. Acknowledging that the exact number of atoms was unknown in these gaseous volumes, the Latin word "mole" was used. "Mole" translates to "lump" recognizing the ambiguous quantity of gas. A number of attempts have been undertaken historically to quantify the mole. Robert Millikan's oil drop experiment revealed the change of a single electron, which could then be divided into Faraday's Constant for the charge of a mole of electrons. Dividing the charge of a mole of electrons by the charge of a single electron yields the number of electrons in a mole, $6.022\times10^{\wedge}23$. Students should be familiar with how to translate between the given quantities. Student's first use atomism/Dalton's atomic theory in third grade noting that matter is made up of particles too small to be seen. This the first time where students will undertake the process of counting these invisible particles. Electrolysis of water provides a tangible experience to demonstrate the constituent parts of water, though the definite proportions of water may not be easily seen due to the solubility of the gasses produced. The concept of relative mass can be explored by comparing small groups of like items. For example, relative masses of beans can be compared with pinto, white, and black beans. If bags are created with equal numbers of like beans, students can develop a concept of why the smallest bean will have a relative mass of 1, analogous to hydrogen.
