Filtration

Filtration is the physical separation of solids from a fluid using a filtration medium.
The filtration medium is chosen depending on the purpose of filtration, quantity, and particle size of the solid.
In general, filtration efficiency increases with particle size.
In simple filtration, the precipitate is first allowed to settle, and the mother liquor is decanted down a glass rod into a funnel fitted with filter paper.
The precipitate is then transferred to the filter paper using a rubber policeman.
Ashless filter paper can be ignited to recover the precipitate, when weighing is required.
Alternatively, a sintered-glass funnel fixed to a Buchner flask, which has a sidearm that can be connected to a vacuum pump, is used to trap the precipitate.

Filtration is a physical separation process that involves passing a suspension through a porous medium to separate solids from fluids. During filtration, solids collect on the porous medium while liquids, also collectively known as the filtrate, pass through. The filtration medium is selected based on the filtration purpose, quantity, and nature of the precipitate. The general criteria for a suitable filtering medium are that it is inert, mechanically strong, nonabsorbent toward dissolved materials and permissive toward rapid filtration.
The simplest filtration apparatus consists of filter paper fitted in a long-stemmed funnel sitting above a beaker. The solution to be filtered is poured down a glass rod onto the filter paper. The filtrate is collected in the beaker, and the solid is retained on the filter paper. Any solid that adheres to the glass rod or the beaker with the original solution is dislodged using a rubber policeman. Because filter paper is hygroscopic, ashless or low-ash filter paper is preferred when weighing is required. Ashless filter paper is also employed in gravimetric procedures that involve igniting the solids before weighing.
Alternatively, the solid can be collected in glass or silica crucibles containing a porous glass disc. The solid is transferred to the crucible fitted into a Buchner flask, and filtration is performed under suction. After filtration, the crucible is dried and weighed directly. The weight difference of the crucible before and after filtration gives the mass of the collected solid.

Filtration separates a solid from a liquid by passing a suspension through a porous medium. The solid stays on the filter, and the liquid, called the filtrate, passes through. This makes filtration a physical separation process, not a chemical change.

The filtering medium is chosen for the purpose of the separation, the amount of material, and the nature of the precipitate. A good filter medium should be inert, mechanically strong, nonabsorbent toward dissolved materials, and able to let liquid pass through quickly. These features help the separation work efficiently and keep the sample unchanged.

A simple filtration setup uses filter paper in a long-stemmed funnel above a beaker. The mixture is poured down a glass rod so it flows onto the paper. The filtrate collects in the beaker, while the solid remains on the filter paper. Any solid that sticks to the glass rod or the beaker is removed with a rubber policeman.

When the solid must be weighed, ashless or low-ash filter paper is preferred because filter paper is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. Ashless filter paper is also used in gravimetric procedures that require the solid to be ignited before weighing. Another option is to collect the solid in a glass or silica crucible with a porous glass disc, then use suction filtration in a Buchner flask. After filtration, the crucible is dried and weighed directly, and the mass of the solid is found from the difference between the crucible’s weight before and after filtration.

Understand and be prepared to use values specific to chemical processes: the mole, molar mass, molarity, and percent composition. EXPLANATION: During the early and mid-1800s, a tremendous amount of early research poured into building an understanding of the way that atoms combine. This work required analysis of the percent composition of different substances. Joseph Proust's work with tin oxides led him to publish his law of definite proportions noting that a given pure substance will have a constant ratio for the combination of elements making up the substance. Building on Proust's work, John Dalton published his law of multiple proportions and atomic theory noting that multiple patterns exist for the way that atoms combine, yet the combining atoms are invariable. Meanwhile Amedeo Avogadro hypothesizes that given equal pressures and temperatures, two equal volumes of gas will contain equal numbers of atoms. Acknowledging that the exact number of atoms was unknown in these gaseous volumes, the Latin word "mole" was used. "Mole" translates to "lump" recognizing the ambiguous quantity of gas. A number of attempts have been undertaken historically to quantify the mole. Robert Millikan's oil drop experiment revealed the change of a single electron, which could then be divided into Faraday's Constant for the charge of a mole of electrons. Dividing the charge of a mole of electrons by the charge of a single electron yields the number of electrons in a mole, $6.022\times10^{\wedge}23$. Students should be familiar with how to translate between the given quantities. Student's first use atomism/Dalton's atomic theory in third grade noting that matter is made up of particles too small to be seen. This the first time where students will undertake the process of counting these invisible particles. Electrolysis of water provides a tangible experience to demonstrate the constituent parts of water, though the definite proportions of water may not be easily seen due to the solubility of the gasses produced. The concept of relative mass can be explored by comparing small groups of like items. For example, relative masses of beans can be compared with pinto, white, and black beans. If bags are created with equal numbers of like beans, students can develop a concept of why the smallest bean will have a relative mass of 1, analogous to hydrogen.
