Unter Koagulation versteht man die Agglomeration von kolloidalen Partikeln zu größeren Aggregaten.
Diese Technik wird zur Reinigung von Abwässern angewendet, die suspendierte kolloidale Feststoffe enthalten, die in der Regel negativ geladen und von einer elektrischen Doppelschicht aus adsorbierten Ionen umgeben sind.
Die elektrostatische Abstoßung verhindert eine Kollision der Partikel und stabilisiert das Kolloid.
Bei der Zugabe von Metallkoagulanzien wie Aluminium oder Eisensalzen reagieren sie mit den Bikarbonaten im Abwasser zu den jeweiligen Hydroxiden.
Diese liefern hochgeladene Gegenionen, die an den Schwebstoffen adsorbiert werden können und deren Ladung neutralisieren.
Das schnelle Mischen fördert Kollisionen zwischen den Schwebstoffen, die miteinander verschmelzen.
Nun kommen die Partikel zusammen und bilden etwas größere, wenn auch mikroskopisch kleine Partikel, die als Mikroflocken bezeichnet werden.
Wenn Mikroflocken die optimale Größe erreichen und zu Makroflocken werden, können sie durch Sedimentation oder Filtration entfernt werden, um gereinigtes Wasser zu erhalten.

Kolloidale FestSubstanzen sind in Lösung suspendierte FestSubstanzpartikel. Sie sind normalerweise negativ geladen und ziehen eine kompakte Primärschicht aus positiv geladenen Ionen an, die weitere Gegenionen anziehen und so eine elektrische Doppelschicht bilden. Die elektrostatische Abstoßung zwischen den geladenen Doppelschichten verhindert die Kollision der Partikel und stabilisiert die Kolloide. Diese FestSubstanzen sind oft unerwünscht, da sie schwer zu entfernende GiftSubstanzen enthalten können. Die Koagulation ist eine Technik, die dabei hilft, Kolloide zu aggregieren und zu entfernen, und ist für die Abwasserreinigung anwendbar.

Metallkoagulanzien sind eine Art von Koagulanzien, die in diesem Reinigungsprozess verwendet werden können. Wenn der kolloidalen Lösung Metallkoagulanzien wie Aluminium- oder Eisensalze zugesetzt werden, reagieren diese mit den Bicarbonaten im Abwasser und ergeben die entsprechenden Hydroxide. Diese Hydroxide liefern hoch geladene Gegenionen, die an den suspendierten Kolloiden adsorbiert werden können und deren Ladung neutralisieren. Schnelles Mischen sorgt für die Verteilung dieser hoch geladenen Ionen und damit für die Häufigkeit der Bildung neutralisierter Kolloide. Gleichzeitig begünstigt die Vermischung Kollisionen zwischen den neutralen Kolloiden, die durch den hydrophoben Effekt zu deren Zusammenwachsen führen. Beim weiteren Mischen kommen die Partikel zusammen und bilden etwas größere, aber immer noch mikroskopisch kleine Partikel, sogenannte Mikroflocken. Wenn Mikroflocken die optimale Größe und das optimale Gewicht erreichen und zu Makroflocken werden, können sie durch Sedimentation oder Filtration entfernt werden, um reines Wasser zu erhalten.

Coagulation helps remove colloidal particles from wastewater. Colloids are tiny solid particles suspended in a liquid. They are usually negatively charged, so they attract a compact first layer of positive ions. More counterions gather around them and form an electrical double layer. This charge barrier keeps the particles apart and stabilizes the colloid.

These suspended solids can be a problem because they may contain toxins that are hard to remove. Coagulation is used to make the particles clump together so they can be taken out of water. In wastewater treatment, metal coagulants are often used for this step. Aluminum salts and ferric salts are common examples.

When these coagulants are added, they react with bicarbonates in the wastewater and form the matching hydroxides. The hydroxides supply highly charged counterions that can adsorb onto the colloids. This neutralizes the particle charge. Rapid mixing spreads the ions through the solution and increases the chance that neutralized colloids will form.

Mixing also helps the particles collide. After they lose their charge, they can come together because of the hydrophobic effect. Continued mixing makes them join into slightly larger microscopic particles called microflocs. When the microflocs grow to the right size and weight, they become macroflocs and can be removed by sedimentation or filtration to produce clean water.
