Beta-tricalcium Phosphate

Beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) is a resorbable calcium phosphate bioceramic used to support bone repair and regeneration. Its chemical similarity to the mineral phase of bone promotes osteoconduction, while gradual dissolution releases calcium and phosphate ions and creates space for replacement by newly formed tissue. In bioengineering, β-TCP can be shaped into porous scaffolds, granules, or composite materials that provide temporary structural support and a surface for cell attachment. Its tunable porosity, degradation behavior, and compatibility with biological tissues make it valuable for bone graft substitutes, tissue-engineered constructs, and studies of mineralized tissue formation.

Beta

2024

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...

Phosphate Buffer

2024

The phosphate buffer system is a critical biological mechanism for maintaining pH stability in the body. This system operates primarily through two components: sodium dihydrogen phosphate (NaH2PO4), which acts as a weak acid, and sodium hydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4), which serves as a weak base. Sodium dihydrogen phosphate does not fully dissociate in neutral or acidic solutions. When a strong base, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is introduced into the solution, sodium dihydrogen phosphate...

2016

A two dimensional model material of discotic zirconium phosphate was developed. The inorganic crystal with lamellar structure was synthesized by hydrothermal, reflux, and microwave-assisted methods. On exfoliation with organic molecules, layered crystals can be converted to monolayers, and nematic liquid crystal phase was formed at sufficient concentration of monolayers.

Roles of Electrolytes: Calcium and Phosphate

2024

Calcium and phosphate are essential electrolytes in the human body, with calcium being the most abundant mineral. Around 99% of the body's calcium is stored in the skeleton and teeth, forming a crystal lattice of mineral salts in combination with phosphates. Calcium plays crucial roles in various bodily functions such as blood clotting, neurotransmitter release, muscle tone maintenance, and nervous and muscle tissue excitability. The calcium concentration in blood plasma is primarily regulated...
