Biocompatible Devices

Biocompatible devices are medical or bioengineering tools designed to perform their intended function while interacting safely with living tissues, fluids, or cells. Their performance depends on material properties such as surface chemistry, mechanical compatibility, degradation behavior, and resistance to corrosion, which influence protein adsorption, cellular attachment, and immune responses at the device interface. Applications include implants, biosensors, drug-delivery systems, prostheses, and tissue-engineering scaffolds. By improving integration with biological systems and reducing inflammation, toxicity, or device failure, biocompatible devices support safer diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and regenerative medicine.

A method for seeding titanium blood-contacting biomaterials with autologous cells and testing biocompatibility is described. This method uses endothelial progenitor cells and titanium tubes, seeded within minutes of surgical implantation into porcine venae cavae. This technique is adaptable to many other implantable biomedical devices.

This study presents a methodology to prepare 3D, biodegradable, foam-like cell scaffolds based on biocompatible side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Confocal microscopy experiments show that foam-like LCEs allow for cell attachment, proliferation, and the spontaneous alignment of C2C12s myoblasts.
