Image Processing Techniques

Image processing techniques are computational methods for transforming, enhancing, and interpreting images to extract useful visual information. They operate by manipulating pixel values through processes such as filtering, segmentation, thresholding, feature extraction, and image registration, often to reduce noise, improve contrast, or identify structures. In bioengineering, these methods help quantify cell morphology, analyze microscopy and medical images, track tissue growth, and reconstruct three-dimensional biological structures. Their outputs support diagnostics, biomarker measurement, device development, and experimental reproducibility, while increasingly integrating with machine learning to automate classification and measurement in complex biological datasets.
