Membrane Feeding Unit

A Membrane Feeding Unit is a laboratory device that enables blood-feeding arthropods, such as mosquitoes, ticks, or sand flies, to obtain blood through an artificial membrane rather than directly from a host. The system typically circulates or holds warmed blood beneath a biologically compatible membrane, which insects pierce with their mouthparts to ingest a controlled meal. In biological techniques, membrane feeding supports vector colony maintenance, pathogen transmission studies, and assessment of vector competence under standardized conditions. It also improves experimental reproducibility and can reduce reliance on live animals while allowing researchers to control blood source, temperature, feeding duration, and infectious dose.

Detailed investigations on mosquito stages of malaria parasites are critical to design effective transmission blocking strategies. This protocol demonstrates how to effectively culture infectious gametocytes and then feed these gametocytes to mosquitoes to generate mosquito stages of P. falciparum.

Mosquito Feeding Assay: A Method to Evaluate Test Compound Effects on Mortality and Fecundity of Adult Female Mosquitoes
