Mouse Pup Model

A mouse pup model uses newborn or juvenile mice to investigate biological development, disease mechanisms, and responses to experimental interventions in a living organism. Because pups undergo rapid, stage-dependent changes in organ maturation, immune function, behavior, and physiology, researchers can manipulate defined developmental conditions and measure resulting molecular, cellular, or whole-animal outcomes. This model supports studies of neonatal disease, neurodevelopment, nutrition, infection, toxicology, and regenerative biology, while enabling controlled genetic and environmental experiments. Findings from mouse pups can clarify how early-life processes shape health and disease, although developmental differences between mice and humans must be considered when interpreting translational relevance.

Transplantation of Interneuron Precursor Cells into the Brain of a Mouse Pup

2025

Source: Quattrocolo, G., et al. Homochronic Transplantation of Interneuron Precursors into Early Postnatal Mouse Brains. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the transplantation of interneuron precursor cells into the neonatal mouse brain using either a homotopic or heterotopic approach. The procedure involves securing an anesthetized recipient pup, identifying the target brain region, and injecting a suspension of precursor cells derived from a donor pup at the same developmental stage.

Magnetic Isolation of Microglia from Mouse Pup Brains

2025

In this video, we describe a protocol for isolating CD11b cells, including microglia, from mouse pup brains using magnetic-activated cell sorting. The brain tissues are homogenized to obtain single-cell suspensions, which are incubated with anti-CD11b antibody-coated microbeads, followed by a magnetic column-based separation to purify the CD11b+ cell population.

Two-Photon Microscopy for Imaging Neuronal Morphology in a Mouse Pup

Source: Mizuno, H., et al. In Vivo Two-photon Imaging of Cortical Neurons in Neonatal Mice. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video showcases two-photon microscopy being used to image neurons in the brain of an anesthetized transgenic mouse pup. The two-photon laser allows for deeper imaging with high spatial resolution and minimal light scattering, enabling the detailed capture of neuronal morphology, including dendritic projections.

Source: Chen, S., et al., Stereotaxic Surgery for Genetic Manipulation in Striatal Cells of Neonatal Mouse Brains. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the stereotaxic injection of a viral vector encoding Cre recombinase and green fluorescence protein or GFP into the striatum of a genetically modified mouse pup to achieve gene manipulation by excising a loxP-flanked STOP cassette, activating red fluorescence protein or RFP as a reporter.
