Age-related Disorders

Age-related disorders are diseases and functional conditions that become more common or severe with advancing age, making them central to biology, medicine, and public health. They arise through interacting processes such as cellular senescence, accumulated molecular damage, impaired tissue repair, chronic inflammation, and declining physiological reserve, which can disrupt systems throughout the body. Studying these disorders helps researchers distinguish normal aging from disease, identify genetic and environmental risk factors, and develop diagnostic tools and interventions. This work supports healthier aging and informs research on neurodegeneration, cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and other conditions associated with aging.

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...

2011

Voice disorders are debilitating in aging and Parkinson disease. The ultrasonic vocalizations of rats, also affected by these conditions, can be used to study these voice disorders, their neural substrates, and the nature of functional recovery with behavioral intervention.
