Artificial Seawater Medium

Artificial seawater medium is a laboratory solution formulated to reproduce the chemical conditions of natural seawater for cultivating marine organisms, cells, or microorganisms. It works by combining defined concentrations of salts, major ions, trace elements, and, when required, nutrients and buffers to establish suitable salinity, osmolarity, and pH. In biology, this controlled medium supports algal, microbial, invertebrate, and other marine culture systems while reducing variability associated with collected seawater. Researchers use it to investigate growth, metabolism, development, host-microbe interactions, and environmental responses under reproducible conditions, making it valuable for experimental marine biology, biotechnology, and ecological studies.

Current diagnostic antimicrobial susceptibility testing relies on the planktonic growth of isolates in nutrient rich, aerobic conditions. Here, we employ an alternative artificial sputum medium to study antimicrobial susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms under both aerobic and microaerophilic conditions more representative of the cystic fibrosis lung.
