Beta-galactosidase Activity

Beta-galactosidase activity is the rate at which the enzyme beta-galactosidase catalyzes the breakdown of beta-galactosides, including lactose, and is widely used to study enzyme function and gene regulation. The enzyme binds its substrate and hydrolyzes the beta-glycosidic bond, producing glucose and galactose from lactose; activity can be quantified by measuring colored products generated from synthetic substrates such as ONPG. In biology, these assays help assess the lac operon, monitor bacterial growth and physiology, and measure promoter activity in reporter systems. Beta-galactosidase activity therefore provides a practical link between molecular mechanisms and observable experimental results.

This video demonstrates an in vitro assay utilizing β-glucans to activate microglial cells for the production of superoxide radicals, a reactive oxygen species. In brain cancer cells, the generated reactive oxidants actively suppress tumor cell proliferation and induce cell death.

β-Galactosidase Assay to Evaluate Drug-Induced Cytotoxicity in Parasites

Here we describe the standard protocol for the detection of β-galactosidase activity in early whole mouse embryos and the method for paraffin sectioning and counterstaining. This is an easy and quick procedure to monitor gene expression during development that can also be applied to tissue sections, organs or cultured cells.

Beta

2024

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...
