Cell Matrix Interactions

Cell matrix interactions are the physical and biochemical relationships between cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM), a network that provides structural support and regulates cell behavior. Cells bind ECM proteins through receptors such as integrins, which cluster into focal adhesions and connect to the cytoskeleton; mechanical forces and biochemical signals then influence adhesion, migration, proliferation, differentiation, and survival. In biology, studying these interactions helps explain tissue organization, wound healing, development, and cancer progression. This knowledge also supports research in tissue engineering, biomaterials, and regenerative medicine, where controlling cell adhesion and matrix properties can guide the formation and function of engineered tissues.

Overview of Cell-Matrix Interactions

2023

The extracellular matrix or ECM holds cells together to form a tissue and allows the cells within the tissue to communicate. ECM comprises proteins such as fibronectin, collagen, laminin, etc. The most abundant protein in this space is collagen. Collagen fibers are interwoven with carbohydrate-containing protein molecules called proteoglycans. ECM allows cell migration and provides a structural scaffold at cell adhesion that anchors the cell when the extracellular matrix proteins interact with...
