Culture Confluency

Culture confluency is the percentage of a cell-culture surface covered by adherent cells, providing a visual measure of population density and growth. As cells proliferate and spread across the substrate, available space decreases; cell-cell contact and changes in nutrient access can alter division, morphology, and behavior, depending on the cell type. Monitoring confluency helps researchers decide when to feed, passage, or collect cultures and supports consistent timing across experiments. In biology, standardized confluency improves reproducibility in studies of cell growth, differentiation, drug responses, disease models, and tissue engineering.

Measuring the Confluence of iPSCs Using an Automated Imaging System

2020

The goal of the protocol is to compare different extracellular matrix (ECM) coating conditions to assess how differential coating affects the growth rate of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). In particular, we aim to set up conditions to obtain optimal growth of iPSC cultures.

Cell Culture Methods for New Approach Methodologies

2026

Mammalian and other animal-derived cell culture systems are widely used in biomedical research as New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) that reduce reliance on animal testing while enabling controlled investigation of cellular responses. These in vitro systems provide reproducible platforms for studying disease mechanisms, drug activity, toxicity, and neuronal function under defined laboratory conditions. Establishment and Maintenance of Cell Cultures To establish a culture, cells are seeded into...

Magnetically Bioprinted 3D Spheroid Co-cultures: A Method for Co-culturing Cancerous Cells and Fibroblasts

2023

This video explains the 3D magnetic bioprinting of co-cultured pancreatic cancer cells and fibroblasts. Pancreatic cancer cells and activated pancreatic fibroblast cells are co-cultured and magnetized using a biocompatible nanoparticle assembly, to generate spheroids, under the influence of magnetic forces.

A Co-culture Method to Model Neuron-Oligodendrocyte Interactions

2025

This video demonstrates the establishment of a co-culture of human induced neurons (iNs) and induced oligodendrocyte precursor cells (iOPCs). iNs are mixed with iOPCs in a co-culture and then incubated to support the maturation of both iNs into neurons and iOPCs into oligodendrocytes. Neurons form synaptic connections with other neurons and oligodendrocytes, while oligodendrocytes develop myelin sheaths around the neurons' axons.

Cell Co-culture Patterning Using Aqueous Two-phase Systems

Aqueous two-phase systems were used to simultaneously pattern multiple populations of cells. This fast and easy method for cell patterning takes advantage of the phase separation of aqueous solutions of dextran and polyethylene glycol and the interfacial tension that exists between the two polymer solutions.
