Force Transducer Measurement

Force transducer measurement is a technique for quantifying mechanical force by converting physical load into an electrical signal, providing objective data on biological movement and function. In a typical system, an applied force slightly deforms an elastic element, and strain gauges or piezoelectric components detect that deformation and produce a calibrated voltage proportional to force. In biology, these measurements help characterize muscle contraction, biomechanical loading, cell-generated forces, and interactions between organisms and their environment. The resulting force-time data support studies of physiology, locomotion, motor control, tissue mechanics, and the effects of disease or experimental treatments.

Analysis of the contractile properties of chemically skinned, or permeabilized, skeletal muscle fibers offers a powerful means by which to assess muscle function at the level of the single muscle cell. In this article we outline a valid and reliable technique to prepare and test permeabilized skeletal muscle fibers in vitro.

A novel technique to record the pressures within the skull is described. The minimally invasive method uses a fibre-optic pressure sensing system to accurately measure intracranial pressure (ICP) in anaesthetized rats without causing significant brain trauma. The technique may be used in a wide range of experimental models.

2023

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC Fluid pressure is an important flow characteristic that is required to determine the aerodynamics of a system. One of the oldest and still existing pressure measurement systems is the manometer due to its accuracy and simplicity of operation. The manometer is generally a U-shaped glass tube that is partially filled with liquid, as shown in Figure 1. The U-tube manometer requires no...

The non-nutritive suck (NNS) device can easily collect and quantify NNS features using a pacifier connected to a pressure transducer and recorded through a data acquisition system and laptop. Quantification of NNS parameters can provide valuable insight into a child's current and future neurodevelopment.
