Gastrointestinal Inflammation

Gastrointestinal inflammation is an immune response in the digestive tract that helps detect and remove harmful stimuli but can damage tissues when it persists. Injury, infection, or disruption of the intestinal barrier can activate epithelial cells and immune populations, prompting the release of cytokines and other mediators that alter blood flow, recruit leukocytes, and influence the gut microbiota. Acute inflammation supports repair, whereas chronic inflammation may impair nutrient absorption and contribute to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. Studying these mechanisms helps researchers understand host-microbe interactions, identify biomarkers, and develop strategies for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.

Overview In response to tissue injury and infection, mast cells initiate inflammation. Mast cells release chemicals that increase the permeability of adjacent blood capillaries and attract additional immune cells to the wound or site of infection. Neutrophils are phagocytic leukocytes that exit the bloodstream and engulf invading microbes. Blood clotting platelets seal the wound and fibers create a scaffold for wound healing. Macrophages engulf aging neutrophils to end the acute inflammatory...

Here, a protocol to isolate and establish primary fibroblast/myofibroblast (MF) cultures from frozen gastric, small intestinal, and colonic tissue-yielding cells with a MF phenotype-is presented. These cells express CD90, α-SMA and vimentin. MFs can be used for a variety of functional assays including enzymatic activity and cytokine production.

The human digestive system is an intricate and essential network for nutrient absorption and waste elimination. It encompasses the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and several accessory organs. Here's a detailed walkthrough of this complex system: Oral Cavity: The starting point of the digestive process. It comprises lips, cheeks, teeth, and salivary glands within mucous membranes. It extends to the soft palate, the floor of the mouth, and the tongue. Pharynx: It is a tubular...
