Mesenchymal Stromal Cells

Mesenchymal stromal cells are nonhematopoietic, multipotent cells found in connective tissues that support tissue maintenance and repair. In culture, they can adhere to plastic and differentiate toward osteogenic, chondrogenic, and adipogenic lineages under appropriate conditions; they also influence neighboring cells through paracrine signaling and immunomodulatory activity. These properties make mesenchymal stromal cells important in biology research on tissue regeneration, inflammation, and cell-based therapies. Investigators study their isolation, expansion, phenotype, and functional behavior to evaluate therapeutic potential, understand tissue remodeling, and develop approaches for repairing bone, cartilage, and other damaged tissues.

Culturing human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (hMSCs) with autologous serum, reduces the risks of rejection by xenogeneic material and other negative effects. It also allows for the recovery of a subset of mesodermal progenitors, which can deliver fresh hMSCs. Embedding hMSCs in an autologous fibrin clot enables easy handling and effective surgical implantation.
