Pancreatic Duct Cannulation

Pancreatic duct cannulation is a technique for placing a small catheter into the pancreatic duct to access pancreatic secretions or deliver substances, making duct function measurable in biological research. The cannula is positioned at the duct opening and secured so that fluid can be collected, flow can be monitored, or experimental treatments can be introduced under controlled conditions. Researchers use this approach to study exocrine secretion, digestive enzyme release, ductal physiology, and responses to hormonal or pharmacological stimuli. By providing direct access to the pancreatic duct, cannulation supports investigations of normal function and disease-related changes in pancreatic biology.

A protocol for the cannulation of the mouse submandibular salivary gland via the Wharton's duct is described. For this experiment, the trypan blue solution is used as a dyer to demonstrate how this technique effectively delivers infusions into the targeted gland, and to suggest the reliability of this new approach as a potential clinical drug/cell therapy for the regeneration of salivary glands.

Here we describe a technique to cannulate the mesenteric lymph duct in rats which enables quantification of lipid and drug transport via the lymphatic system following intestinal delivery. The technique can be adapted to assess mesenteric lymph concentrations and/or transport of fluid, immune cells, peptides, proteins and lipophilic molecules.
