Pockels Cell Modulation

Pockels cell modulation is an electro-optic method for controlling light intensity, polarization, or timing with high precision, making it useful for rapidly changing illumination in biological experiments. A Pockels cell uses the linear electro-optic, or Pockels, effect: an applied electric field changes the refractive index of an electro-optic crystal, altering the polarization of transmitted light through a polarizer and enabling voltage-controlled attenuation. In microscopy and optical stimulation, this modulation supports fast laser shuttering, controlled excitation, fluorescence measurements, and patterned light delivery while reducing unnecessary sample exposure and improving temporal control.
