Post Surgical Mouse Care

Post-surgical mouse care is the structured monitoring and supportive management provided to mice after an experimental or veterinary procedure to promote recovery, reduce pain and distress, and protect animal welfare. Care typically combines observation of activity, posture, wound appearance, food and water intake, and other health indicators with prescribed analgesia, warmth, hydration, and appropriate housing; interventions are adjusted when recovery deviates from expected patterns. In biological research, consistent aftercare helps distinguish procedure-related effects from experimental outcomes, supports reliable data collection, and enables timely recognition of complications such as infection or impaired healing. Standardized records and humane endpoints also strengthen reproducibility and ethical oversight.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Preoperative Preparation The initial assessment should include observation of alertness, posture, gait, and grooming behavior, as changes in these parameters may indicate underlying health issues. Body weight should be recorded...

Basic Mouse Care and Maintenance

2023

Mice (Mus musculus) are small rodents that breed and sexually mature quickly, making them perfectly suited to generating large animal colonies for biological research. As compared to other mammalian species, mice are simple and inexpensive to maintain in the laboratory. Nevertheless, mouse colonies do have specific husbandry needs that are critical to preserving animal health and safety as well as experimental reproducibility. This video demonstrates standard practices that ensure mice are...

Surgical management and nursing care are crucial in treating Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD). Here is an organized and enhanced overview of the surgical interventions and the associated nursing care for PUD: Surgical Interventions for Peptic Ulcer Disease Vagotomy: This procedure aims to reduce gastric acid secretion by cutting a portion of the vagus nerve. While effective, its frequency has declined due to the availability of effective acid-suppressing medications. It may be performed with or...
