Pain Score Assessment

Pain score assessment is the structured evaluation of pain intensity and its effects, usually through a standardized scale that converts a person’s experience into a measurable score. In a numerical rating scale, for example, the individual selects a value from 0, meaning no pain, to 10, meaning the worst pain imaginable; visual analog and faces scales provide alternative formats, while behavioral tools help assess nonverbal patients. Repeated scores allow clinicians and researchers to track changes over time, compare responses to treatment, and relate subjective pain reports to biological processes such as inflammation, nerve signaling, and tissue injury.

Diffuse noxious inhibitory control, temporal summation and wound hyperalgesia testing are demonstrated in the obstetric patient. These tests evaluate inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms of pain processing and are here utilized to evaluate endogenous analgesia at different time-points during pregnancy and the peripartum period to help reveal individual s risk for persistent pain.

2023

Source: Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Abdominal pain is a frequent presenting concern in both the emergency department and the office setting. Acute abdominal pain is defined as pain lasting less than seven days, while an acute abdomen refers to the abrupt onset of severe abdominal pain with features suggesting a surgically intervenable process. The differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain is broad; thus, clinicians must have a...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Monitoring Animals for Signs of Pain and Distress Recognizing early signs of pain is essential for ethical animal research. Animals are routinely monitored using behavioral, physical, and physiological parameters that reflect...

Electrophysiological Methods to Assess Peripheral Pain Block in an Anesthetized Rat

Here, we present a method for assessing the activation and block of sensory axons in peripheral nerves in acute, anesthetized, in vivo rat experiments using two types of spinal electrophysiological measurements that can discriminate the activity of nerve fiber subtypes: Local Field Potentials and Wide Dynamic Range single neuron recordings.
