Stereotaxic Instrument Use

Stereotaxic instrument use is a precision method for positioning tools within the brain or other anatomical regions, enabling researchers to target specific structures with controlled accuracy. The apparatus stabilizes the subject and guides needles, electrodes, or other probes along defined three-dimensional coordinates, often referenced to anatomical landmarks, to deliver substances or record biological activity. In biology, this approach supports studies of neural circuits, behavior, disease mechanisms, and treatment responses in animal models. By improving the consistency and localization of injections, tissue sampling, and electrophysiological recordings, stereotaxic methods strengthen experimental reproducibility and help connect regional anatomy with physiological function.

The monitoring of extracellular neurotransmitter levels in distinct brain regions of freely moving animals offers insights on the link between neurotransmitter release and behavior. In vivo microdialysis coupled with electrochemical detection provides excellent anatomical and chemical resolution; and information on how basal neurotransmission is altered by pharmacological or physiological manipulations.

Stereotaxic (or stereotactic) surgery is a method used to manipulate the brain of living animals. This technique allows researchers to accurately target deep structures within the brain through the use of a stereotaxic atlas, which provides the 3D coordinates of each area with respect to anatomical landmarks on the skull. After the skull is exposed, anesthetized animals are mounted on a specialized instrument known as a stereotaxic frame, which enables the precise placement of experimental...

(2016)This video demonstrates stereotaxic viral injection for precise neuronal gene editing in the mouse brain. The protocol ensures accurate virus delivery to the dentate gyrus, enabling fluorescent labeling and CRISPR-mediated gene knockout to study neural circuits, gene function, and disease mechanisms in vivo.
