Semen Sample Preparation

Semen sample preparation is the standardized processing of ejaculate for laboratory analysis, helping produce reliable measurements of sperm concentration, motility, morphology, and other biological properties. After collection, the sample is typically allowed to liquefy, gently homogenized, and evaluated under controlled conditions; processing may also include dilution, centrifugation, washing, or density-based separation to remove seminal plasma and enrich sperm cells. In biology, these steps support fertility assessment, reproductive research, assisted reproduction, and studies of sperm function. Consistent preparation reduces variation caused by sample viscosity, debris, and handling, improving comparisons across experiments and clinical evaluations.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Sample preparation is the way in which a sample is treated to prepare for analysis. Careful sample preparation is critical in analytical chemistry to accurately generate either a standard or unknown sample for a chemical measurement. Errors in analytical chemistry methods are categorized as random or systematic. Random errors are errors due to change and are often due to noise in instrument. Systematic errors are due to...

Histological Sample Preparation for Light Microscopy

2023

Histology is the study of cells and tissues, which is typically aided by the use of a light microscope. The preparation of histological samples can vary greatly based on the inherent properties of the samples such as size and hardness as well as expected post-processing which includes planned staining techniques or other down-stream applications. As described in this video, specimen preparation typically begins with a fixation procedure to prevent degradation of the sample by naturally...
