Serum-free Insect Medium

Serum-free insect medium is a laboratory formulation designed to grow and maintain insect cells without animal serum, providing a more controlled alternative for biological research and biomanufacturing. It supports cell survival and proliferation through defined combinations of nutrients, salts, amino acids, vitamins, lipids, and other components that regulate metabolism and maintain suitable osmotic and pH conditions. By reducing variability and eliminating undefined serum constituents, serum-free insect medium helps improve reproducibility in suspension cell culture, recombinant protein production, and baculovirus-based expression systems. Its controlled composition also supports process optimization, downstream purification, and more consistent experimental outcomes.

Osmoregulation in Insects

2019

Malpighian tubules are specialized structures found in the digestive systems of many arthropods, including most insects, that handle excretion and osmoregulation. The tubules are typically arranged in pairs and have a convoluted structure that increases their surface area. Malpighian tubules extend from the digestive tract, typically the area between the midgut and hindgut, into the hemolymph—a mixture of blood and interstitial fluid found in insects and other arthropods, as well as most...
