Streptomycin Pretreatment

Streptomycin pretreatment is an experimental method in which streptomycin is administered before a subsequent biological challenge or intervention to modify resident bacterial populations. In susceptible bacteria, this aminoglycoside binds the 30S ribosomal subunit, disrupts translation, and promotes mistranslation, thereby suppressing growth and reshaping microbial communities. In biology, researchers use this approach to create controlled infection models, examine pathogen colonization, and distinguish microbiota-dependent effects in host tissues. Because pretreatment can alter community composition and host physiology, experimental outcomes require appropriate untreated or vehicle controls and careful interpretation.

2016

The pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass with protic low-cost ionic liquids is shown, resulting in a delignified cellulose-rich pulp and a purified lignin. The pulp gives rise to high glucose yields after enzymatic saccharification.

Handheld Device for Saliva Pretreatment to Improve Cortisol Detection

2026

This protocol describes a rapid saliva pretreatment method for improving cortisol detection. A handheld filtration device is used to remove mucins and other interfering substances while preserving the target analyte. The pretreated saliva exhibits improved capillary flow, thereby enabling more consistent and reproducible assay performance.

2020

Ammonia fiber expansion (AFEX) is a thermochemical pretreatment technology that can convert lignocellulosic biomass (e.g., corn stover, rice straw, and sugarcane bagasse) into a highly digestible feedstock for both biofuels and animal feed applications. Here, we describe a laboratory-scale method for conducting AFEX pretreatment on lignocellulosic biomass.

Source: Jung, A. L. et. al., Legionella pneumophila Outer Membrane Vesicles: Isolation and Analysis of Their Pro-inflammatory Potential on Macrophages. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the pre-treatment of macrophages with Legionella pneumophila outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) to examine their effect on bacterial replication. By altering host immune signaling, OMVs make macrophages more permissive to infection. Higher colony counts in treated cells, compared to untreated ones, indicate...
