Water Stress Indicators

Water stress indicators are measurable physiological, biochemical, or visual traits that reveal when biological systems, especially plants, experience insufficient water availability. As dehydration develops, reduced cell turgor, stomatal closure, changes in leaf temperature, wilting, and shifts in hormones such as abscisic acid signal altered water balance and stress responses. Researchers and agricultural scientists use indicators including relative water content, stomatal conductance, and chlorophyll fluorescence to assess plant condition, compare drought tolerance, and guide irrigation or crop management. In biology, these measures connect environmental conditions with cellular function, growth, photosynthesis, and survival.

Water Quality Analysis via Indicator Organisms

2023

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba -The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner Water quality analysis monitors anthropogenic influences such as pollutants, nutrients, pathogens, and any other constituent that can impact the water’s integrity as a resource. Fecal contamination contributes microbial pathogens that threaten plant, animal, and human health with disease or illness. Increasing water demands and strict quality standards require that water...

Certain organic substances change color in dilute solution when the hydronium ion concentration reaches a particular value. For example, phenolphthalein is a colorless substance in any aqueous solution with a hydronium ion concentration greater than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH < 8.3). In more basic solutions where the hydronium ion concentration is less than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH > 8.3), it is red or pink. Substances such as phenolphthalein, which can be used to determine the pH of a solution, are called...

The Morris Water Maze

The Morris water maze is one of the most widely used behavioral tests for studying spatial learning and memory. In the initial phases of this task, rodents must swim to a platform to escape from a pool of water. The platform is then hidden under the water’s surface, so that the animal is required to remember it’s location in order to escape. This simple yet powerful maze design can be used to assay cognitive function, study animal models of neurodegenerative disease, and test potential drug...

2007

Calcium is a ubiquitous messenger in the nervous system, essential for triggering neurotransmitter release and changes in synaptic strength. Here we demonstrate a technique for loading Ca2+-indicators into Drosophila nerve terminals. We also demonstrate fabrication of the required apparatus and emphasize points critical for the technique's success.

An Introduction to Modeling Behavioral Disorders and Stress

2023

Recently, it has been discovered that behavioral conditions such as, depression, anxiety and stress-response have a neurological basis. Understanding the biological underpinnings of these conditions may help scientists in developing more effective therapies to treat these disorders. Typically, rodent models are used in this field and behavioral scientists create these models using interventions like drug administration or surgery. It is important to understand how to create and evaluate rodent...
