Anastomotic Leak Prevention

Anastomotic leak prevention comprises the surgical strategies used to reduce failure of a joined gastrointestinal tract after cancer resection, a complication that can cause infection, delayed treatment, and poor outcomes. Prevention combines tension-free, well-perfused tissue alignment with meticulous suturing or stapling, protection from contamination, and, when appropriate, intraoperative assessment of blood flow or temporary diversion. These measures are especially important in colorectal and upper gastrointestinal oncology, where prior treatment, tumor location, and patient condition can affect healing. Effective prevention lowers postoperative morbidity, supports timely adjuvant therapy, and helps researchers evaluate how surgical technique and biological factors influence anastomotic healing.

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer. Some...

2025

Here we present a murine model for femoral artery anastomosis, offering researchers a valuable animal model to study and simulate vascular anastomotic stenosis. This development is crucial for advancing our understanding of the pathophysiology underlying this condition and facilitating more accurate and effective research into vascular diseases.
