Automated Drill

An automated drill is a computer-controlled tool that removes or penetrates material with programmed control over motion, speed, and depth, improving precision and reproducibility compared with manual drilling. Its motorized bit follows a defined trajectory while sensors or software regulate rotation and feed rate, allowing researchers to produce consistent holes, sections, or samples under controlled conditions. In cancer research, automated drilling can support the preparation of bone and tissue specimens, standardized experimental models, and sampling procedures that require repeatable geometry or force. By reducing operator variability, the technology strengthens comparisons across experiments and may improve the reliability of studies involving tumor growth, invasion, or treatment response.

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a significant contributor to back pain and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Numerous animal models of intervertebral disc degeneration exist. We demonstrate an ovine model of intervertebral disc degeneration, utilizing a drill bit, which achieves a consistent disc injury and reproducible level of disc degeneration.

This protocol describes performing a craniectomy using a high-speed pneumatic drill on a 3-month-old Danish Landrace pig. The access is made through the frontal bone and reveals the ventral dura mater and underlying cerebral hemispheres. This procedure allows for access to a large portion of the pig brain.

Automated Acoustic Dispensing for the Serial Dilution of Peptide Agonists in Potency Determination Assays

Peptide adsorption to plasticware during traditional tip-based serial dilutions can significantly impact potency determination and confound the understanding of structure-activity relationships used for lead identification and lead optimization phases of drug discovery. Here methods for automated acoustic non-contact serial dilution of peptide samples are described.
