Calvarial Window

A calvarial window is a surgically created opening or transparent access site in the skull that enables repeated observation of tissues beneath it in living animals. In cancer research, surgeons remove or thin a small area of calvarial bone, protect the exposed dura with a sterile coverslip, and secure the window to stabilize the imaging field. Through intravital microscopy, researchers can track tumor growth, angiogenesis, invasion, blood flow, and interactions with immune cells over time. This longitudinal approach reduces animal-to-animal variation and helps evaluate how therapies alter tumor behavior and the tumor microenvironment.
