Culture Medium Supplementation

Culture medium supplementation is the deliberate addition of nutrients, growth factors, hormones, serum components, or other defined factors to a cell-culture medium to maintain and regulate cell growth. These supplements modify the chemical environment surrounding cultured cells, supplying metabolic resources and activating or inhibiting signaling pathways that influence proliferation, survival, differentiation, and phenotype. In cancer research, researchers tailor supplemented media to sustain tumor cell lines, primary cancer cells, or organoid cultures while modeling conditions relevant to tumor biology. Controlled supplementation improves experimental reproducibility and supports studies of drug response, cellular heterogeneity, and mechanisms that drive cancer progression.
