Kidney Extraction

Kidney extraction is the controlled surgical removal of one or both kidneys, a procedure that provides intact renal tissue for clinical treatment or laboratory analysis. It involves accessing the abdominal cavity, isolating the kidney from surrounding tissues, vessels, and ureter, and removing it while preserving the structures or cellular material required for downstream studies. In cancer research, extracted kidneys can be examined for tumor formation, metastasis, tissue damage, molecular changes, and responses to experimental therapies. Careful handling and preservation support histological, genomic, and biochemical analyses, helping researchers connect organ-level changes with cancer progression and treatment outcomes.

Techniques that are reliable and efficient for the isolation of kidney immune cells are needed for downstream applications. This requires surface antibody labeling of a small number of kidney immune cells. Herein, we describe a concise method for isolation of kidney immune cells that seemingly achieves this goal.

Kidney Structure

The kidneys are two large bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen. They filter the blood several times a day to remove toxins and rebalance water and electrolytes of the circulatory system via the renal veins. The kidneys receive blood directly from the heart via the renal arteries. These arteries enter the kidney at the hilum, the concave surface of the bean, where they branch and divide into smaller vessels and capillaries. The renal cortex is the thick outer layer of the kidney. It...
