Local Tumor Treatment

Local tumor treatment refers to cancer therapies directed at a specific tumor or nearby tissue rather than distributed throughout the body, making it important for controlling disease at its primary site. Depending on tumor type and location, treatment may remove the mass surgically, destroy cancer cells with focused radiation or thermal energy, or deliver therapeutic agents directly into the tumor; these approaches aim to maximize tumor damage while limiting exposure to healthy tissue. In cancer research, local treatment supports studies of tumor response, recurrence, drug delivery, and combination therapy. Its effectiveness depends on tumor size, accessibility, biological features, and whether cancer has spread beyond the treated region.

Electrochemotherapy is the local treatment of solid tumors. The main mechanism is electroporation-mediated permeabilization of the tumor cells' membrane which enables increased internalization of cytostatics like bleomycin and cisplatin. Thus, antitumor effectiveness is potentiated at the site of the application of electric pulses to the tumors.

2025

This video demonstrates a technique to study the in vivo localization of tumor-specific antibodies in a mouse tumor xenograft model. Upon subcutaneously injecting cancer cells into mice for tumor formation, fluorescently-labeled antibodies are injected that bind to tumor-specific receptors, enabling in vivo assessment of antibody localization via imaging.

In early gastric cancer, the aim of surgery is to precisely remove the distal stomach including the primary tumor. To do this, accurate localization of the tumor is crucial, especially in totally laparoscopic surgery. This protocol describes a procedure for intraoperative gastroscopy in totally laparoscopic subtotal gastrectomy.
