Tumor Dissection

Tumor dissection is the careful separation of tumor tissue from surrounding normal tissue or distinct regions within a tumor for cancer research and diagnostic analysis. Researchers use visual, microscopic, or instrument-assisted techniques to isolate selected areas while preserving tissue architecture and cellular material for downstream examination, such as histology, molecular profiling, or cell analysis. This process helps distinguish malignant cells from stromal, immune, and healthy tissues, improving the interpretation of genetic and biological differences within tumors. By enabling region-specific sampling, tumor dissection supports studies of tumor heterogeneity, disease progression, treatment response, and mechanisms of therapeutic resistance.

Many types of human brain tumors are localized to specific regions within the brain and are difficult to grow in culture. This protocol addresses the role of tumor microenvironment and investigates new drug treatments by analyzing fluorescent primary brain tumor cells growing in an organotypic mouse brain slice.

Tumor Implantation and Injection of a Tumor Vaccine in a Mouse Model

This video demonstrates a cell-based tumor vaccination assay. A mouse, intradermally injected with B16-F10 melanoma cells for tumor formation, is vaccinated with B16-F10 cells secreting Flt3L cytokine near the developed tumor. The secreted Flt3L from the vaccine promotes the maturation and proliferation of dendritic cells that then present tumor antigens to T cells in lymph nodes, triggering a targeted anti-tumor immune response.
