Gas Compressibility

Gas compressibility is the ability of a gas to decrease in volume when pressure is applied, a property that distinguishes gases from liquids and solids. Because gas particles are widely separated and move freely, increasing pressure brings them closer together; at constant temperature, this relationship is described by Boyle’s law, while deviations from ideal behavior arise from intermolecular attractions and particle volume. Chemists quantify these effects using pressure, volume, temperature, and the compressibility factor, which compares real gases with the ideal gas model. Understanding gas compressibility supports calculations involving gas storage, transport, reactions, and industrial processes such as liquefaction and high-pressure synthesis.

Compression Tests on Hardened Concrete

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA There are two distinct stages in a construction project involving concrete. The first stage involves batching, transporting, and casting fresh concrete. At this stage, the material is viscous, and the workability and finishability are the key performance criteria. The second stage occurs when the hydration process begins shortly after the concrete is placed in the form, and the concrete will...

This protocol demonstrates how to prepare a briquette sample and conduct a uniaxial compression experiment with a briquette in different CO2 pressures using a visualized and constant-volume gas-solid coupling test system. It also aims to investigate changes in terms of coal’s physical and mechanical properties induced by CO2 adsorption.

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...

Ideal Gas Law

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Andreas Züttel - Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology The ideal gas law describes the behavior of most common gases at near-ambient conditions and the tendency of all chemical matter in the dilute limit. It is a fundamental relationship between three measurable macroscopic system variables (pressure, temperature, and volume) and the number of molecules of gas in the system, and is therefore an essential link between the microscopic and the...
