Contrast Material

Contrast material is a substance administered during medical imaging to make differences between tissues, organs, or blood vessels more visible. Its mechanism depends on the imaging modality: iodinated and barium-based agents increase X-ray attenuation in computed tomography and radiography, while gadolinium-based agents alter local magnetic properties and signal intensity in magnetic resonance imaging. Clinicians use contrast-enhanced studies to characterize lesions, evaluate vascular structures, detect inflammation or obstruction, and guide diagnosis and treatment planning. Understanding contrast material selection, distribution, timing, and safety helps researchers and healthcare professionals optimize image quality while considering contraindications and potential adverse reactions.

Electron Channeling Contrast Imaging for Rapid III-V Heteroepitaxial Characterization

The use of electron channeling contrast imaging in a scanning electron microscope to characterize defects in III-V/Si heteroexpitaxial thin films is described. This method yields similar results to plan-view transmission electron microscopy, but in significantly less time due to lack of required sample preparation.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In contrast to the production of cars or toasters, where millions of identical copies are made and extensive prototype testing is possible, each civil engineering structure is unique and very expensive to reproduce (Fig.1). Therefore, civil engineers must extensively rely on analytical modeling to design their structures. These models are simplified abstractions of reality and are used to...

Phase-Contrast Microscopes In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...
